In this episode we sit down with Yasmin Elsayed, Head of Early Years at Jumeirah International Nurseries (Palm Jumeirah).
Q1 What inspired you to become a nursery manager?
Well, I started as a co teacher, and I moved from Montessori system to EYFS. I’ve learnt what does it mean for Early Years Foundation stage and I felt that I wanted to do more to support the children in a bigger picture and also to support the staff. The teachers that want to grow and wants to understand more about EYFS and how it is very important in terms of brain development for every single child, as they know every single child is an individual. So, I wanted to be the person who would support those teachers and to fulfil their dreams in order to for the children to reach their potential.
Q2 Tell us about an engaging activity that’s been a hit with the children?
Well, the most hit activity when I was a teacher it was just blasting music and I felt that having music, children dancing, they are painting, they are communicating with their friends, dancing, holding hands, building on that friendship and bonding in the classroom, painting and get that creativity side out. I felt, I feel that until today this has been my greatest hit activity, just painting and dancing while blasting music.
Q3 How do you encourage parents to participate in their child’s learning journey?
So, we encourage parents in various ways, we do have a lot of events, it’s when we share with parents to come and join us participate in activities in their child’s classroom and by just standing outside and welcome them in the morning. Hearing their feedback, respecting their feedback It’s how we build our bond together and how we work together because it is at the end of the day of partnership. It’s not just the school alone or the classroom alone It’s all of us working together for that same goal at the end of the day. So, having parent’s involvement is very important and it’s allowing them to be heard. Smiling, morning, good evening, have a lovely day, how was your day? It’s always very important to be to be just us to be who we are and to have always have a smile on our face.
Q4 What is it about your Nursery that makes it special?
What makes it special about Palm? Well, I feel that every JINS branch is has its own atmosphere, and has its own special environment. And that’s what makes it special for the palm. What makes it very special for us is ‘the team’!. What made it special for me when I first joined is that we have such an amazing teacher’s, they are from different parts of the world. Yet we still share the same vision and the same goal for the children. Parents, we have parents from everywhere from every single nationality we have over 30 nationalities and I feel that’s what makes it special. Obviously the location makes it very special the children looking at the tram passing by, it’s every single part of JINS the Palm that’s makes it special. But definitely what makes it extra extra special is the children’s laughter and hearing them every day coming in the morning, just to spend time with us, learn, grow and learn new skills. That’s what makes it very special.
Q5 Share a special childhood memory?
Best childhood memory, we’re built to become resilient. We’re always outside making new friends learning how to ride bikes. If we have a new friend that is around in the neighbourhood, we show them around always being outdoors and playing and discovering new places and new areas and how I can play football and just always being outdoors and making your friends.
